Race For Life – Update!

Well, we’re nearly there.  On June 13th myself and my running buddy will run 5k for Cancer Research UK and we have, in our copious free time, been practicing!  A few days ago we finally did 5k in a reasonable time, although it has to be said, the Running Buddy doesn’t believe a word of it.

“No way!” she exclaimed, when we reached the end of our run and collapsed under the shade of some trees.  “No way have we run 5k!”

Out came her mobile phone, on went the app that tracked and timed our progress and there it was, the little flashing light of glory, you have arrived, well done, now please stretch out.  “Impossible!” she exclaimed.  “We were crap!”

Now, I grant you, neither my Running Buddy nor I are particularly strong runners.  I mean, it’s not that we’re unfit – I think all things considered, we’re both perfectly hearty for our ages – but neither of us are about to volunteer for a marathon, or lift heavy weights of our own volition.  That said, the Running Buddy is far more self-critical than I am.  “We walked for a few minutes!” she exclaimed.  “And we’ve only been going for half an hour!  It’s impossible!  No way have we run 5k!  We’re just not good enough yet!”

We make, I realise, a very good physical duo, in many ways.  The Running Buddy – I hope she won’t mind me saying –  provides the ambition, drive and determination to excel, if nothing else because she refuses to believe that we can excel.  And I provide a sort of affable optimism, tied in with the sincere hope that, having excelled (I hope) we can now sit down for a few minutes and maybe have an ice cream.  When the Running Buddy first informed me that she wanted to complete the race in less than 30 minutes, I was skeptical.  Now, oddly enough, the tables have turned, and I’m the one holding out quiet hope that we’ll make it in a decent time.  The only danger is this… if we know we can run it in 30 minutes, I’m now deeply concerned that the Running Buddy will want to run it in 25…

The Running Buddy after a righteous run...
